Real Madrid have broken an unspoken rule of the transfer market – now they will be punished

Real Madrid are fighting to emerge from a period of almost unprecedented crisis and have made the life of incoming manager Jose Mourinho infinitely more difficult thanks to the ill-conceived words from president Florentino Perez.

Perez has spent 23 years as Real Madrid president in two spells, the first stretching from 2000 to 2006 and then again since 2009. He is a shrewd political operator, yet in a move that reeked of self-preservation and bravado, he was drawn into a slip last week that threatens to echo around the Bernabeu for months to come.

In the heat of the presidential election, he was drawn into an error by Enrique Riquelme. Faced with his rival promising that Erling Haaland would sign for Real Madrid if he were elected, Perez wanted to offer a response.

No matter that Manchester City threatened to sue Riquelme over the claim, which was also rapidly debunked by Haaland agent Rafaela Pimenta. Perez wanted to lay down a marker of his own.

He did so by making a rash promise.

“On Tuesday, I'm going to make a significant offer to a Champions League club for a top player. It would be the largest transfer fee Real Madrid has ever paid. It would be around €150 million. A hint? I can't give you any, I'm just hinting at what we're going to do,” he said.

“You remember I brought Luis Figo, David Beckham, Ronaldo, Kaka. This kid of top, top name. It’s that level of player. The excitement will be crazy.”

The temptation of seeing a new Galactico in Real Madrid colours fuelled the socios as they overwhelmingly voted Perez back in – but at what cost?

The €150m bid lands

Perez was true to his promise. On Tuesday, Real Madrid released an official statement revealing that they had tabled an offer for Atletico Madrid’s Julian Alvarez – a player they were never, realistically, going to have a bid accepted for.

What Los Blancos would not have counted on was the PR disaster that followed.

Atleti have already gone on the offensive this summer against Barcelona via their social channels, and did so again with their neighbours in their sights.

Three laughing emojis were just the start of a series of acerbic tweets aimed in the direction of the Bernabeu, all mocking their rivals’ offer and finishing off by requesting that their rivals stop “stealing” their academy prospects.

Real Madrid’s famous €150m bid came up dry. While there is at least the happy spin-off that Barcelona will not be able to land Alvarez for anything less than that figure, the impact on the rest of Los Blancos’ transfer window is not so cheery.

Alvarez bid promises to cause an unwelcome ripple effect

Perez has given away Real Madrid’s budget, a rookie mistake for any club trying to extract any kind of value in the market.

Chelsea will be looking at the situation of Enzo Fernandez, who has dropped constant hints about wanting to move to Los Blancos this summer, and will be wondering just how much they can extract from the Spaniards now they know they have €150m burning a hole in their pockets. Certainly, it’s hard to see them budging from their asking price of €120m, which may even have been nudged upwards in light of this revelation.

Any club Real Madrid approach in the summer now know the cards of the men from the Spanish capital, whether that’s Arsenal as they fight to retain Riccardo Calafiori, West Ham as they attempt to get maximum value for Mateus Fernandes or Manchester City as they ponder Rodri’s future.

But this also extends to players already at the club. Remember that impasse they have in their contract talks with Vinicius Junior? They are in no position to plead poverty as he seeks wage parity with Kylian Mbappe.

Perez may have been able to keep what was in essence an empty promise, yet this €150m swoop, which was a hopeless endeavour from the outset, promises to tie Real Madrid in knots at the very time they need to be set free.
