Daniel Sturridge on trial at La Liga club

Former England international Daniel Sturridge will join Spanish side RCD Mallorca tomorrow on a trial basis ahead of the 2021/22 La Liga season.

Sturridge, 31, has been without a club for over a year, since his contract at Turkish club Trabzonspor was terminated in March 2020.

He scored four times in just seven starts for Trabzonspor, but his contract was ended when he was given a four-month ban on all football activity for breaching betting rules.

Sturridge has been training on his own every since, including at eighth tier Kidsgrove Athletic, and has managed to stay fit, which has prompted Mallorca to take a chance on him.

Their official club statement reads: "RCD Mallorca has extended an invitation for Daniel Sturridge to participate from tomorrow, July 14, in the training sessions of the club's first team as part of its preparation process."

Mallorca finished second in the Segunda Division last season, and if Sturridge can impress on trial, then he could be the clinical goalscorer they're looking for in La Liga.

They missed out on the title to Espanyol simply on goal difference; they scored just 54 goals in comparison to Espanyol's 71, so a goalscorer is needed.

How good was Sturridge in his prime?

Known primarily for his six-year spell at Liverpool, Sturridge scored a total of 76 Premier League goals in 218 games, including 21 in 2013/14 where he formed the deadly 'SAS' partnership with Luis Suarez.

He left the club for Trabzonspor in 2019 after injuries and lack of form saw his minutes diminish under Jurgen Klopp.

Sturridge has 26 England caps to his name, scoring eight goals for his country, including the winner against Wales in a 2-1 victory at Euro 2016.
