Sacked Cagliari manager Mazzarri to be given contract extension

Serie A club Cagliari confirmed the sacking of head coach Walter Mazzarri on Monday – but the 60-year-old could be in line for a contract extension with the club.
The Sardinians sit 17th in Italy’s top flight, three points clear of the relegation zone, albeit Salernitana have two games in hand over them.
After a run of four defeats in five, Cagliari decided to take action, with the announcement of Mazzarri’s sacking no surprise when it arrived. He has become the second boss sacked by the club this season, having only taken charge of the team in September following the dismissal of Leonardo Semplici.

What is stranger about the deal, though, is that the coach has the option to extend his contract with the club until 2024, according to Sportitalia, which states that the 2023/24 season in his original deal was subject to a clause in his deal.
Equally, though, it is claimed that Mazzarri has another clause in his contract that allowed him to unilaterally extend his deal with the club until June 2024 if he is sacked when outside the relegation zone – exactly as they find themselves presently.
What this means is that the Tuscan coach will be paid by the club until that time – unless he finds another club.
Where this decision plays into Cagliari’s favour, though, is that they will be due compensation for the manager should another club want to take on his services.
It would be little surprise if Mazzarri was to be given another opportunity elsewhere. Afterall, he possesses more than 20 years’ worth of coaching experience and has overseen teams such as Sampdoria, Napoli and Inter over that time.
He finished up at Cagliari with just seven victories from 35 matches, a win percentage of just 20%, which is the lowest he has achieved in his career.
