While Schalke may be down on their luck following their relegation from the Bundesliga last season, one glimmer of hope remains in young striker Matthew Hoppe.

Indeed, with a worrying amount of debt and a squad full of overpaid stars, Hoppe is perhaps one of the few players the Royal Blues fans can passionately get behind and hope the club will build a new and exciting squad around.

Having joined the club in 2019 after spells in LA Galaxy’s youth academy, Hoppe broke into the Schalke first team last season and scored six goals in 22 league matches.

Along the way the young striker scored a hat-trick against Hoffenheim, becoming the youngest ever American to manage the feat in the Bundesliga.

As such, a number of bigger clubs around Europe have taken an interest in the young striker this summer.

What position does Matthew Hoppe play in?

Despite his young age, Hoppe has already played no less than 39 games for Schalke and in each of those matches the young talent has played as a striker.

Hoppe seems perfectly capable of playing as a second striker or perhaps even as a No.10, but is undoubtedly a classic No.9 through the manner in which he enjoys finding space in the box and getting on the end of moves.

To date, the young striker has managed to bag eight goals and three assists in 39 games for Schalke.

What clubs are interested in Matthew Hoppe

As is often the case when a young player breaks through in the Bundesliga, it seems as though half of the Premier League are desperate to sign him up for the new season.

Following Hoppe’s first team appearances for the Royal Blues, the American international was linked with moves to Tottenham, Southampton, Newcastle and Wolves.

However, recent reports have suggested that the young striker is in fact a more serious transfer target for Everton and Arsenal.

According to our most recent statistics, the young striker is currently valued at €5.3 million, but would likely demand a fee much higher than that due to his potential.

When does Matthew Hoppe’s contract expire?

Having only signed his first professional contract in February 2021, Hoppe’s contract at Schalke currently runs until the summer of 2023.

Whether the young player will sign a contract extension remains to be seen and will likely depend on how much game time he gets in Gelsenkirchen and whether Schalke can quickly bounce back and win promotion to the Bundesliga this season.
