Real Madrid may not be as strong as they once were in European football but the squad they’ve announced for this season’s Champions League still packs a punch.

Raphael Varane and Martin Odegaard may have departed for England but in their place are the equally impressive David Alaba and Eduardo Camavinga.

Similarly, fans of the Madrid club will be hoping that the returning warm glow of Carlo Ancelotti will be able to get the best out of senior stars like Eden Hazard and Gareth Bale this season.

In total, Ancelotti has named a 40-man squad, though 15 of the members are youth prospects with 25 being officially from the senior side.

The most interesting inclusion from the youth side is Andri Gudjohnsen, the son of former Barcelona midfielder Eidur Gudjohnsen.

David Alaba, a free transfer signing from Bayern Munich in the summer, is also included as he is set to make his European debut for Real Madrid.

Gareth Bale, who spent last season on loan at Tottenham, has also been named in the list.
