Former Bayern Munich midfielder Dietmar Hamann has questioned his former club’s decision to buy Marcel Sabitzer in the summer.

After six years in Saxony, Sabitzer left RB Leipzig in the summer to join Bayern in a deal worth around €15 million.

Although the midfielder was heavily linked with moves to Liverpol and Manchester United, he ultimately opted for a move to Munich when the offer was made.

However, despite working under his previous head coach Julian Nagelsmann at his new club, Sabitzer has yet to start a game for Bayern and has been largely used as a substitute in the league and Europe.

As such, Hamann has questioned Bayern’s need to buy a player that can’t force his way into the starting XI and whether it was a mistake to spend money on him in the first place.

'I would not have bought him'

“I have to say quite honestly, I would not have bought him [Sabitzer]. Or only if [Corentin] Tolisso had left. That surprised me a bit,” said the former Liverpool star in an interview with SPOX.

"For me he is too undisciplined. The question is also what his best position is. At eight, he probably doesn't score enough goals.

“On the six, he's too hot-headed for me, because there you need someone who radiates calm."

"It's not easy when you come to Bayern as a seasoned player and are number 12 to 14 at the moment.

“If you're not used to that - he wasn't a substitute for the last five or six years - then it's not an easy situation. I'm curious to see how he does in the next few weeks."

Whether Sabitzer will be able to push into Bayern’s starting XI or simply be used as back-up for the German champions remains to be seen, but he’ll certainly have to offer more if he wants to prove his doubters wrong.
