Arsenal have confirmed that midfielder Lucas Torreira has joined Fiorentina on loan.

The Uruguay international midfielder has struggled to settle with the Gunners since arriving from Sampdoria, despite a fine debut campaign, and was hampered by personal problems last season.

Torreira even indicated that he wished to move back to South America to join Boca Juniors on a permanent basis but has instead made the switch temporarily to Italy.

Fiorentina also have a purchase option in the deal, which is reportedly set at €15 million.

In a statement, the club confirmed: "Midfielder Lucas Torreira has joined Serie A side Fiorentina on loan for the 2021/22 season.

"The Uruguayan international who was part of his national team’s Copa America squad this summer, spent last season on loan with Atletico Madrid, making 19 appearances in their La Liga winning campaign.

"Torreira has made 89 appearances for us since joining from Serie A side Sampdoria ahead of the 2018/19 season and was part of our FA Cup Final match-winning squad in 2020. His goal in the 4-2 north London derby win at Emirates Stadium in November 2018 was a notable highlight during his first season with us.

"Everyone at Arsenal wishes Lucas all the best in Italy with Fiorentina this season.

"The loan deal is subject to the completion of regulatory processes."

Torreira could make his Fiorentina debut against Torino on Saturday.
