Real Madrid have confirmed that Nacho has signed a new contract with the club that will run until 2023.

The 31-year-old Spain international has been with Real Madrid since 2001 and has played his entire career with the club, featuring for both the 'B' team and the senior side over the course of his professional life.

Indeed, Nacho featured 33 times for the first team in the 2020/21 season, scoring a single goal in the process. It was the fourth time in the last five seasons that he has featured on more than 30 occasions, with the exception - the 2019/20 campaign - one that was hampered by injury problems.

Conversely, Nacho benefitted from the physical issues of Sergio Ramos to feature so regularly last term.

In a statement on the club's official website, it was confirmed: "Real Madrid C. F. and Nacho Fernandez have reached an agreement to extend the player's contract in a deal that ties him to the club for the next two seasons and until 30 June 2023."

Nacho's role at Real Madrid

Indeed, the timing of Nacho's contract extension has coincided with that of Sergio Ramos, a veteran of 16 season with Real Madrid, being confirmed as a Paris Saint-Germain player.

This opens the door to a role of greater importance for Nacho next season, particularly as Manchester United are closely tracking Raphael Varane.

He has become a veteran of important matches, having played every minute of all six of Real Madrid’s knockout Champions League fixtures last season not to mention in both Clasico victories over Barcelona.

Certainly, with head coach Carlo Ancelotti having the final say over the players in his squad, it is clear than Nacho is heavily involved in the Italian’s plans as he prepares for his first season back at Real Madrid.
