Giorgio Chiellini has signed a new two-year deal with Juventus that will keep him in Turin until 2023, the Serie A club have confirmed.

Chiellini was technically a free agent as his previous contract with Juve had expired on 30 June.

The veteran centre-back, however, was on international duty with Italy at that point and famously led the Azzurri to Euro 2020 victory, overcoming England in a dramatic Wembly shootout after a 1-1 draw.

Now Chiellini, who turns 37 on 14 August, has committed his future to Juve and will spend the next two campaigns captaining them.

A statement on the club's official website reads: "Giorgio Chiellini embodies everything that Juventus stands for, and it is through his commitment and excellent displays over the course of last 16 years that has earned him a contract renewal.

"There is an overlap in Giorgio’s DNA and that of Juve’s. He forms a big part of Juve’s history, yet also the present and the future. He is grit and passion; he is heart and focus. Giorgio is a thousand figures, a thousand numbers, many records and trophies, but he’s also made up of 11 elements:"

Chiellini at Juventus

Chiellini has been a mainstay of the Juventus side for more than 15 years, having arrived at the club from Fiorentina, with whom they had a co-ownership agreement that lasted a year, in the summer of 2005.

He has since gone on to play 535 times for the club, scoring 36 goals and creating 24 more.

Those first years at Juve were tough, in part due to the fallout of the Calciopoli scandal that saw the Turin giants relegated to Serie B.

However, Chiellini remained at the club and his importance grew over the years such that he was a mainstay of a team that won nine successive Scuddetti, ultimately graduating to team captain.

No matter what happens over the next two years, Chiellini will be remembered as a great both for Juventus and Italy, thanks to his performances at Euro 2020.
