Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has admitted that he intends to pursue an additional midfield option for the club during the January transfer window.

The Gunners have allowed Ainsley Maitland-Niles to join up with Roma on loan until the end of the season, leaving them short of depth in the heart of the field.

Numerous players have been linked with a move to the Emirates over the course of the next four weeks, including Paris Saint-Germain’s Georginio Wijnaldum.

For club legend Ian Wright, the idea of the former Liverpool and Newcastle player arriving at the club – even for a brief spell – is one that excites him.

“I saw Wijnaldum’s name linked with Arsenal. That would be amazing. A loan signing from PSG,” the former striker affirmed on the Kelly and Wrighty Show.

“Someone like that in the midfield. Of that experience. He is a Premier League winner. Just to help with the youngsters and a Sambi Lokonga just to keep it going.

“Then, they can add to the squad and, all of a sudden, Arsenal can start challenging and challenging seriously.”

What is Wijnaldum’s transfer status?

Gini Wijnaldum might only have signed for Paris Saint-Germain in the summer, but he has endured a rocky time at Parc des Princes.

The Netherlands star has struggled to discover his best form, often being played out of position on a role on the right of midfield. Furthermore, he has been limited when it has come to making the type of dashing forward runs that made him such a force at Liverpool.

Wijnaldum is reportedly discontent at PSG for these reasons and wishes to move back to the Premier League, where Newcastle have also been credited with an interest.

The club, meanwhile, are unwilling to give up such a player at this crossroads. Nevertheless, they could come to a compromise that allows him to move back on a temporary basis.

Ian Wright, then, could get his wish of seeing Wijnaldum leave PSG for Arsenal on loan in the weeks ahead.
