Pedri, Barcelona, 2021/22

Spain remain one of the elite footballing nations in the world and one of the major reasons for their continued success is their ability to produce outstanding young players.

La Roja have already qualified for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and they are one of the favourites to win the competition.

Pedri is the Spanish player at the age of 21 or younger with the most potential according to SciSports.

The young midfielder is widely considered to be one of the best players of his generation and the future of not only Spain but Barcelona.

The 19-year-old holds an outstanding command over possession, and his performances over the past 12 months or so have earned him comparisons to none other than Andres Iniesta.

Second on our list is Yeremy Pino.

At youth level, Yeremi Pino was at Huracan and Las Palmas before joining Villarreal in 2017. At that time, he reportedly had the opportunity to sign for Barcelona but turned the Blaugrana down in order to join the set up at Villarreal.

The fact Barcelona were so keen to sign him in his mid-teens does provide an indication of the type of player he is and his potential quality.

We go back to Barca for number three and Pedri's fellow wonderkid, Gavi. He has been thrust into the spotlight due to the club's struggles this season, but he has grabbed the opportunity with both hands went on to become Spain's youngest ever footballer.

How is the SciSkill ranking calculated?

SciSports explains how our development ratings are gathered:

“Among others, a positive development could be boosted by more playing time, playing time on a higher level or better performances on the pitch.

“A negative development could be due to the player being active on a lower level than he used to play, bad performances or the fact that he does not play that often as he used to do.

“A SciSkill Development of 0.0 could indicate that a player is performing exactly like our algorithm expects him to do. Another reason could be inactivity (e.g. a long-term injury or suspension).”
