After his own professional football career failed to take off, Mendes eventually became an agent in 1996 when he brokered Nuno Espirito Santo's move from Vitoria de Guimaraes to Deportivo.
Mendes' base in Portugal allowed him to hoover up as much young talent as possible, and it was through his presence at several football schools that he was able to gain the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Ricardo Quaresma as clients.

He truly came into the public eye in 2003 after Ronaldo's move to Manchester United. He managed Ronaldo's legendary career through his moves to Real Madrid in 2009, Juventus in 2018 and the return to Man Utd in 2021.
At the start of 2023, though, there are reports that Mendes is splitting with Ronaldo as the super agent was not involved in the veteran's transfer to Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr. Mendes is said to have advised Ronaldo not to do his infamous interview with Piers Morgan, which prompted the end of his Man Utd career.
In 2004, Mendes also played a major part in Chelsea's appointment of Porto head coach Jose Mourinho, even though Mourinho already had a representative at the time.
Mendes' influence at Chelsea grew as he was involved in a number of transfers of Portuguese players to Stamford Bridge - Ricardo Carvalho, Paulo Ferreira, Tiago and Maniche.
The businessman brokers deals through his agency, GestiFute.
Controversy has never been far away from Mendes, as he has constantly been accused by other agents of moving in on their clients without going through the proper channels.
He has also been accused of implementing third-party ownership on players via GestiFute.
Mendes has been named Best Agent of the Year at the Globe Soccer Awards ten times.
Outside of football, he represents Formula 1 star Charles Leclerc, triple jump champion Patricia Mamona, surfer Frederico Morais, tennis player João Sousa and the cyclist João Almeida.

Mendes' agency is also responsible for managers such as Jose Mourinho, Nuno Espirito Santo, Bruno Lage and Gennaro Gattuso. Gattuso and Aitor Karanka are the only non-Portuguese managers that Mendes represents.
