10 players who could transfer to Newcastle this summer

With Premier League survival on the horizon, Newcastle are in the process of drawing up their transfer targets ahead of a busy summer.

The Mapgies spent around £90 million on Kieran Trippier, Dan Burn, Chris Wood and Bruno Guimaraes in the January Window, with Matt Targett arriving on loan.

Eddie Howe is expected to spend big again in the next transfer window, with Saudi cash burning a hole in the club's pockets.

Dean Henderson (Man Utd)

Dean Henderson was given the opportunity to impress in a short window last season at Manchester United.

But, the club now has decided that David de Gea is their undisputed number one which means the England international has seen hardly any game time.

Newcastle's plans to make Henderson the first-choice keeper at St.James' Park could convince him to move, with his international future on the line.

Kepa Arrizabalaga (Chelsea)

The most expensive goalkeeper of all time, it’s fair to say things have not gone to plan for Kepa since arriving from Athletic Bilbao for £72 million four years ago.

An error-filled first two seasons saw Chelsea replace him with Edouard Mendy and it appears a forgone conclusion that the club will look to cut their losses on the 27-year-old.

A change of scenery could be what the Spaniard needs and having shown glimpses of his best in the cups for Chelsea, Kepa could end up becoming a shrewd acquisition should Newcastle gamble on him.

What defenders could transfer to Newcastle this summer?

Diego Carlos (Sevilla)

Newcastle were prepared to break the bank to sign Sevilla centre-back Diego Carlos in January.

However, talks broke down, with director of football Monchi having this to say:

''Newcastle offer was a good, respectable offer but it’s not happening. The offer wasn’t enough. Maybe it wasn’t the right time. Diego is happy here.''

Perhaps the right time for the Brazilian to move to the Premier League is this summer.

Sven Botman (Lille)

Sven Botman is in his second season in Ligue 1 since moving from Ajax. His first campaign was highly successful as he helped Lille to an unexpected title, but this term has been hit by injury issues.

He is viewed as a star of the future and potentially one of the best centre-backs in Europe over the next few years.

Newcastle distanced themselves from a deal in January, after Lille demanded £46m, but this is one that could be revisited, even if Milan are favourites to land him.

What midfielders could transfer to Newcastle this summer?

Philippe Coutinho (Barcelona)

Philippe Coutinho's big money move from Liverpool to Barcelona has proven to be a disaster for all parties, and the Blaugrana were desperate to offload him in order to cut their wage bill.

Newcastle could easily afford his massive wages, but Coutinho reportedly was never keen on the move, and was eventually seduced by Steven Gerrard to sign for Aston Villa instead.

However, should Villa not be able to sign the 29-year-old on a permanent basis, Newcastle could be his best option.

Jesse Lingard (Man Utd)

Jesse Lingard seemed set to move to Newcastle during the January transfer window on loan.

According to the Telegraph, the reason it fell through was simply the amount of money that Manchester United were after.

It is reported that they wanted an enormous £12 million bonus payment if Newcastle achieved Premier League survival with Lingard in their ranks – something they have gone on to do.

He will now be available on a free transfer at the end of the season, with West Ham thought to be the Magpies stiffest competition.

Christian Eriksen (Brentford)

Christian Eriksen is in the middle of rebuilding his career after his horrifying cardiac arrest during the European Championships.

After being fitted with a defibrillator, he was no longer allowed to play in Serie A due Italian football regulations, and so he eventually joined Brentford after six months as a free agent.

The Dane finally looks to be getting back close to his best and recently inspired the Bees to a superb 4-1 away victory at Chelsea, which saw him score his first Premier League goal since leaving Tottenham in 2020.

Newcastle have a fight on their hands to sign Eriksen, though, as 90min reports that six Premier League clubs are fighting for his signature, with a return to Spurs mentioned.

Florian Grillitsch (Hoffenheim)

Florian Grillitsch is a central midfielder that can either play as a ball-winning or box-to-box midfielder, as well as a deep-lying playmaker. He can also play as a ball-playing central defender.

A regular for the Austrian national team, he has made over 140 appearances for Hoffenheim and established himself as a gifted Bundesliga midfielder, who can break up opposing moves just as well as he can begin them for his own side.

Grillitsch's contract expires in June and so a number of suitors are lining up alongside Newcastle, including Arsenal and both Milan clubs.

What forwards could transfer to Newcastle this summer?

Darwin Nunez (Benfica)

Darwin Nunez has thrust himself into the transfer spotlight due to his performances in the Champions League this season.

Earlier in the campaign he put Barcelona to the sword and recently scored against Liverpool.

The Uruguayan has emerged as one of the most prolific strikers in Europe since moving to Benfica and has scored a sensational 32 goals in all competitions in 2021/22.

Newcastle's ability to offer huge wages will be a help in this one, as the Magpies will need to find a way to beat the likes of Manchester United and Liverpool to his acquisition this summer.

Hugo Ekitike (Reims)

Newcastle attempted to sign Reims wonderkid Hugo Ekitike in January, but were knocked back by the French side due to the structure of the deal.

Reims president Jean-Pierre Caillot explained to Le Quotidien du Sport:

''They offered us €35m in total, but with a number of bonuses, including ones that were almost impossible to reach. We want €30m fixed price plus €10m of realistic bonuses.''

The 19-year-old has nine goal in 14 Ligue 1 starts this season and will attract interest from a number of clubs.
