Aurelien Tchouameni played a starring role in Monaco’s 2-1 victory away to Lille on Friday night and concurrently helped make himself even hotter property on the transfer market.

Manchester United, Real Madrid and Liverpool are among a string of teams that have been paying close attention to the Monaco and France midfielder, and they would have been impressed with what they saw as he led them to an eighth-successive victory – the best run any team in one of Europe’s Big 5 leagues is on at present.

Tchouameni may not be known as a goal-scoring midfielder, yet he struck both goals for Monaco at Stade Pierre-Mauroy to move his side at least temporarily into the top three in Ligue 1.

His first was a fizzing shot from the edge of the box that beat home goalkeeper Ivo Grbic with sheer power after an opening period of the game that had been tight and had produced little excitement.

Former Man Utd player Angel Gomes equalised for Lille in the second period, but this was quickly answered by Tchouameni, whose powerful low drive sealed the victory.

As news was breaking that Paul Pogba could move to Manchester City in the summer, such a sight would have been a perfect tonic for United fans.

Tchouameni's all-round talent

Equally, though, those clubs chasing Tchouameni would have been thrilled by his all-round display.

On an evening when Monaco’s key attacking players were strangely quiet, the midfielder offered a game-high four shots but was also very involved in general play. He completed 81.5% of his 54 attempted passes, including over 75% in the opposition half and posted game-high numbers both in terms of interceptions (six) and possession gained (13). Furthermore, he competed in 18 ground duels, winning a majority of these, and also seven aerial duels, winning four.

On top of all this, those clubs watching him would have been struck by his leadership abilities from the midfield, despite being just 22.

Monaco’s asking price of €70m must be looking increasingly tempting.
