OFFICIAL: Gianluigi Donnarumma completes PSG move after signing five-year deal

Paris Saint-Germain have completed the signing of Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma on a free transfer from Milan.

The 22-year-old shot-stopper has quickly established himself as one of the most exciting goalkeepers in European football since breaking into the Serie A side’s first team in 2015 and has now earned a move to Paris following another impressive season.

For much of the previous 10 months, Milan fans had hoped that Donnarumma would sign an extension to his contract with the Italian club, but the young player has instead decided to make the move to PSG in search of silverware and a taste of challenging for European titles.

In a statement released on the club website, PSG confirmed that the goalkeeper would join the club after the European Championship after signing a five-year-deal.

Donnarumma is a European champion from the tournament, having won with Italy.

What does Donnarumma’s signing mean for PSG?

First and foremost, the arrival of the Italian goalkeeper will undoubtedly raise a few question marks as to how Mauricio Pochettino will set up his team next season.

Not only will the Paris club have the impressive goalkeeper Alphonse Areola returning from a loan move to Fulham in the summer, but they also have a truly outstanding shot-stopper on the books in the form of Keylor Navas.

Whether Donnarumma’s arrival will spell the end for Navas in France remains to be seen, but it seems unlikely that either player will be happy playing No.2 next season. Of course, that’s likely to be a problem for Pochettino to fix after the summer off-season.

Aside from the selection headaches, Donnarumma’s signing signifies another impressive capture from PSG in what will likely be another busy summer for the French club.

The Italian star already joins former Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum and Porto defensive youngster Danilo Pereira in making the move to Paris at the end of the season.

Sergio Ramos has also joined from Real Madrid.
