Jesse Lingard sent another message to Manchester United on Sunday as he scored twice for West Ham in their 3-2 win over Leicester City.

The midfielder has been in sensational form since moving to West Ham on loan from Man United in January.

He has now scored eight goals in nine Premier League games for the Hammers from midfield.

That equals the most goals he has ever scored in a single Premier League season.

The 28-year-old has also registered three assists, taking his total number of goal contributions to a staggering 11.

Despite playing just nine games for West Ham, Lingard has already scored more goals in that time than any Man Utd player in 2020/21 except Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford.

And despite not playing a minute of Premier League football before February, he has outscored numerous top players this season in England, including Kevin De Bruyne, Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino, Jack Grealish and Phil Foden.

Lingard’s performances have led West Ham into unlikely challengers for a Champions League spot.

They find themselves in fourth position in the Premier League with just seven games remaining of the season.

It remains to be seen whether Lingard makes his loan move at West Ham permanent or returns to Man Utd.

Arsenal have also been heavily linked with making a bid for the England international.

Former Arsenal and England star Paul Merson believes that a return to Man Utd is unlikely.

“I don’t see him going back to Manchester United,” Merson told Sky Sports.

“He wants to play football. He’s gone to West Ham to play football, now he’s got the love back a bit.

“You want to play every week. There’s no point him going back to Manchester United and playing in the Carabao Cup games.

“He’s scoring goals, he’s making goals. Fair play to David Moyes. He doesn’t get a lot of credit he deserves, he’s got a team there at West Ham.

“This team now, they’re breaking with pace. This is how David Moyes wants to play.”
